When they are of good quality, wooden jewelry boxes have the potential of becoming heirlooms. Their strength gives them the ability to last a lifetime. Their facades can be decorated in many ways.
Carving, the use of embellishments, and even Marquetry can be done on them. There are many kinds of woods that can be used in the making of a jewelry box. One popular, locally available wood is Mahogany.
It is primarily used in jewelry cases for its rot-resistant abilities. A beautiful sheen comes out when this wood is polished. Woodworkers, professional and amateur, prefer mahogany since all kinds of tools can be used to work with it. It is largely used for the making of men’s valets since it exudes a masculine aura.
Easily found in the United States, Ebony is dark in color and gives jewelry boxes a great depth. This wood is also quite dense and sinks when placed in water. This makes it really strong and durable.
If your home decor is antique or classically styled then an ebony jewelry box will fit right in. These lids can be carved in many ways. They can even be buffed differently giving it that vintage look.
Some of the popular designs are stacked boxes or those that come with drawers and removable trays. Jewelry boxes made of White Ash are light in color. Craftsmen opt for this wood because it can be bent in many ways when steamed. This makes it the right wood to use for boxes that are curved or come in many shapes.
The weight to strength ratio of White Ash is balanced, making it strong. Despite being an open-pored wood it does not have any distinctive odor. As a wood, it is strong, shock-resistant and very flexible.
A number of jewelry boxes are made from Cherry wood. Its heartwood varies from light pink to reddish brown and its sapwood is a lighter shade. As it ages, all cherry wood becomes darker adding to its elegance. Thanks to its smooth texture, this is the perfect one to use if you want to carve on your box.
Cherry wood shows off a number of finishes, but the best ones are always the natural variety. Traditionally styled cherry wood boxes can be done up in brass highlights while the more modern versions can be done in silver. Cherry wood boxes are best highlighted with gum streaks.
The lightest of wood boxes are those made of Maple wood. Occasionally White Maple is bleached before it is polished, making it lighter. Curly and bird’s eye Maple is used largely in the creation of some decorative items.
Sadly Maple is a single growth tree. What this essentially means is that once its supply runs out, it is going to become as expensive as other rare trees.
