Famed Printmaking Artists From Around The World

A local of Sarajevo, Tanja Softic studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts (University of Sarajevo) from 1984 up to 1988. In 1989, she was awarded a scholarship to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she obtained her MFA. Right after educating for several years at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, in 2000 she became a member of the University of Richmond’s Department of Art and Art History, where she at present instructs. Right from 1992 until 1995, she worked tirelessly on a series of five handmade artist books, using etching as well as letterpress which are part of the rare book series of the New York Public Library, Library of Congress and Boston Public Library.

Ángel Botello was a Spanish-Puerto Rican painter, sculptor and graphic artist. The artist pundits named him "The Caribbean Gauguin" for his use of vibrant colors and depictions of island life. Botello is regarded as among the greatest Latin-American post-modern artisans and recognition and demand for his fine art continues to grow at this time, getting unheard of auction prices. He never ever connected to any specific artistic school or movement and was a protean artisan: he developed his very own artistic style. He became a versatile and many-sided artisan who worked in all creative media at his reach: oil paintings, drawing, printmaking, bronze sculptures, wood carving, photography as well as mosaics.

Intaglio engraving, as a technique of creating prints, was invented in Germany by the 1430s, well following the woodcut print. Engraving had been utilized by goldsmiths in order to decorate metalwork, which includes armour, musical instruments as well as spiritual objects ever since ancient times, and the niello technique, which required rubbing an alloy into the traces to provide a contrasting color, also dates back to late antiquity. It has been proposed that goldsmiths began to print impressions of their work to record the design, and that printmaking evolved from that.

Martin Schongauer was among the earliest regarded artisans to take advantage of the copper-engraving technique, and Albrecht Dürer is one of the most famous intaglio artisans. Italian as well as Netherlandish engraving began slightly following the Germans, yet were well developed by 1500. Drypoint and etching were also German innovations of the 15th century, possibly by the Housebook Master and Daniel Hopfer respectively. The golden era of artisans engraving was 1450-1550, after which the technique lost ground to etching as a medium for artists, though engravings continued to be made in massive numbers until after the advent of photography. Currently intaglio engraving is mostly utilized for currency, banknotes, passports, and occasionally for high-value postage stamps. The look of engraving is oftentimes mimicked for objects such as wedding invites by making an embossment around lettering printed by yet another process (such as lithography or offset) to suggest the edges of an engraving plate.

Matt Brown has created woodblock prints in Japanese hanga tradition since 1993 using Japanese equipments and materials. The artisan lives in the countryside of New Hampshire, one of the New England states on the East coast of the united states - the heartland of the American dream where the first immigrants from Europe arrived with concepts of freedom, independence and the dream of a far better life. Matt Brown's woodblock prints show more than the natural beauties of the US East coast. In the point of view of the viewer they show the old as well as true American values.

Printmaking is a very vast medium in art and could be studied nearly anyplace, in art schools or from printmaking artists. Once you learn basic principles, you will find there are several techniques to make a really great print.
