Utilizing A Sand Blaster

Sand blasting is a process used to shape, smooth out, or cleans a hard surface by blowing particles of sand at the surface at high speeds. Precautions like wearing protective masks and cloths must be taken while doing this process. Sand blasting must also be done in an area with good ventilation in order to avoid inhalation of silica dust- a by-product in the process. Pressure-feed blaster and suction-feed blaster are the two types of blasters available.

In pressure-feed sand blasters the media is stored in a pressure pot. When the pot is closed the media makes it way through the valve into the air stream before it exits at the nozzle and then blasted onto the component's surface. This type of sand blaster is much quicker and effective than suction-feed blasters. Suction feed blasters makes use of the venturi siphoning action. The media is sucked into the air stream before it exits at the nozzle. Both types of sand blasters make use of various types of media (sand or other fine materials).

Sand blasting is basically used for two different applications. The first is to either carve or etch words or designs onto glass or a similar material. The second application is to clean a surface or remove any foreign material that clings to such surface.

In the process of glass etching, sand blasting is used to change the glass from clear to semi-opaque. This is normally called "snowing" or "whiting". By altering the blasting angle and speed true forms of art can be created. These arts can be words or images. A stencil is used to protect the parts of the glass that an individual don't want to carve out.

There are various methods of decorating glass. The basic methods are hand etching, sand blasting and laser etching. The most widely used one is the sand blasting which is effective and various depths and cuts can be created. The method like hand etching is very laborious and very expensive to make and is time consuming. In Laser etching it is cumbersome and there are lots of flaws in it. This makes the sand blasting the easy choice for decorating, carving and etching the glass.

People find it very difficult to clean the surfaces of old surfaces when they want to do new painting, etching or carving. It is hard to remove the old paint, dirt and dust in the old conventional way. Sand blasting is an effective way to bring out 100% results. Hard particles with high force are splashed over the surface to be cleaned. The dust, remaining old paint stains and sticking dirt will be completely cleaned by this method and a sparkling surface is obtained. This method can be used to clean even larger areas like bridges.
