The connection between a home not guarded by a lit pumpkin and the dark world are clear, so it‘s imperative that you learn how to carve a pumpkin immediately. So what you need to do is grab the following items: one candle, a kitchen knife, a newspaper, and one or more pumpkins.
Pumpkin selection is one part of the project not to be taken lightly. Advances in the science of botany now give us multiple sizes and shapes of pumpkins available to be purchased. What size pumpkin best fits your needs?
Well, it’s often a good idea to get one pumpkin for each member of your family. A rule of thumb is to buy tiny pumpkins when they are the protective symbol for a baby, and progressively larger ones for more mature members of the family. Naturally, Dad would get the biggest pumpkin of all.
With that settled, the next thing you need to do is bring all the items into the living room and spread the newspaper all over the floor. The newspaper is essential because removing seeds from the pumpkin often is a messy affair. Pumpkin juice can become a hidden enemy, so make sure you lay down plenty of newspaper to protect your carpet.
Grab your kitchen knife and make a circular cut around the gourd stem. With one hand, grab and remove all seeds and other material within the pumpkin. Again, with your kitchen knife, create eye, nose, and mouth images in the pumpkin. You can be creative, but most people simply use triangles for the eyes and nose, and give mouths a few square teeth. Finally, put the lit candle in the pumpkin before the evil spirits come, and now, thank heaven, you know how to carve a pumpkin!
