DIY Solutions

When needing to fix your car, many DIY solutions may be accessible to you. Thankfully, Mike Allen of Popular Mechanics has a couple of offbeat auto fix-it ideas you can use.

First solution to help a fuse box

The first example used by Allen is of a driver stranded on a mountainside. A kind passerby asks if he can check out the car while making special not of the fuse box. The passerby teaches the traveler that fuse boxes in cars generally have the same kind of fuses in them which means it is possible to just switch fuses. All the fuses do is connect functions with the car. Connecting functions with their fuses is simple- check the owner manual. In addition, this color-coded chart is often reprinted on a decal affixed to the fuse box. In this case, the fuel pump relay had gone dead. The assistant swapped the fuse from a less important function (rear window defogger, perhaps) to the fuel pump slot.

Offbeat auto fix No. 2- Toast your radiator with eggs and diet soda

Got a problem with a hold inside your radiator? Allen recommends you crack a raw egg and put it within the radiator. Don't use the overflow tank, but the actual radiator. The egg white should, in theory, fix the hole for just a little while till you can fix it for real. If the radiator hole made the levels of fluid go down, check out your drink and see if it can help you. Adding just a little bit of diet soda without the sugar that would normally clog water pumps is a valid solution. Beer and iced tea are examples of other drinks you might try. Try not to top it off with anything that contains a lot of sugar.

Natural oil helps with tip number 3

Your vehicle gets hurt when on bad roads. Oil leaks are caused when rocks hit the oil pan. But if you are in rough country, you are able to find the solution out there. Allen recommends using a twig to plug the hole. Carve the twig into the same shape as the hole and then you can hammer it up into the hole. The problem can be fixed after cutting the rest of the stick off preventing it from catching on anything. Water can be added to top off the crankcase if the hole drained too much. Allen explains, "The oil-pump pickup is not on the exact bottom – the remaining oil will float on top of the water". You need to only do this if there is absolutely no other option. Your car can be much better off with actual motor oil.

Cleaning up a gas tank hole with a fourth offbeat auto fix

A gas tank is used in this problem that is comparable to the previous. You've to be able to carve a chunk out of soap. Get to a mechanic as fast as you are able to after hammering that chunk in. If you need fuel to get out of there, it is not advisable to siphon gas like they used to in old "Dukes of Hazard" episodes. If you can't get your hands on fuel, get ready to either push it or leave it behind and hike to the closest garage.
