This is a brief synopsis of Nutrients by Swiss Sciences Nutrition.
Nutrients are necessary to allow the body to live and grow. Without nutrients our bodies could not create or repair tissues or be able to regulate it’s internal processes. Many nutrients are converted to energy in the body’s digestive system. Carbohydrates, fats, proteins and vitamins are nutrients that come from living organisms. These make up the organic nutrients. Non-living substances like minerals, water and oxygen are referred to as inorganic nutrients. Macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein, fat and water are nutrients that are needed in large quantities. Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are only needed in small amounts. Essential nutrients can’t be created inside the body. These nutrients must therefore be consumed in the foods we eat or in supplements. Nonessential nutrients are created within bodies. Energy providing nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These substances are broken down in our body’s digestive system and synthesized into energy. Nutrients that support metabolism include dietary minerals, vitamins, and water.
The different classes of nutrients are as follows:
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates can be classified as either simple or complex and are the nutrients that include sugars, starches and even fiber. Foods such as rice, wheat, noodles, bread and other grains are all high in carbohydrates. Though they are an important part of our everyday diet carbohydrates can have a negative effect on our health when consumed in large quantities. Highly processed simple carbohydrates such as sugars and starches can have seriously detrimental effects on our health if consumed in large quantities.
Fiber
Fiber is also a carbohydrate and can be classified as either soluble or insoluble. Fiber is found in foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits and nuts. The benefits of Fiber are many. It improved digestion by passing food along in the digestive tract for one. It also helps lower blood glucose levels by slowing the absorption of sugar, which can lower the risks of such diseases as type 2 diabetes.
Proteins
Proteins are made up of amino acids. These are required to produce the substances that make up muscle tissue, skin, and hair. Proteins also create enzymes. These are necessary for the control of chemical reactions within our bodies.
The Fats
Fats can be classified as either saturated or unsaturated. Animal fats are saturated fats and are recognized by being in a solid state at room temperature. Vegetable oils are unsaturated fats and are liquid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats are considered healthier than saturated fats as they are more easily broken down in our bodies. Unsaturated fats are also broken down further into omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids. Unsaturated fats that have been “hydrogenated” are know as Trans-fats. These can be found in foods like margarine and are solid at room temperature. Trans-fats have a negative effect on our health. They are the most unhealthy types of fats.
The Vitamins
Most vitamins can’t be created in our bodies. They are considered essential nutrients and must be eaten either in our food or in dietary supplements. Deficiencies in vitamins can lead to diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, premature aging, and immune system impairment.
The Minerals
Minerals are substances required by our bodies that are not found in organic molecules. Among the primary minerals we consume are sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Minerals can be added to our diet in the form of supplements.
Foods will invariably contain a mixture of nutrient classes. Many nutrients can be stored in the body. Others must be ingested on a daily basis. Not getting enough of the required nutrients will eventually lead to poor health. It is the recommendation of Swiss Sciences Nutrition that we consume a well balanced diet which includes a satisfactory amount of all the necessary nutrients.
