Famed Printmaking Artists From All Over The World

A local of Sarajevo, Tanja Softic studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts (University of Sarajevo) from 1984 up to 1988. In 1989, she was presented a scholarship to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she received her MFA. After educating for several years at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, in 2000 she joined the University of Richmond’s Department of Art and Art History, where she currently instructs. Right from 1992 until 1995, she worked tirelessly on a series of five handmade artist books, using etching and letterpress which are part of the rare book series of the New York Public Library, Library of Congress and Boston Public Library.

Ángel Botello was a Spanish-Puerto Rican artist, sculptor as well as graphic artist. The artisan pundits called him "The Caribbean Gauguin" for his use of vibrant colors and depictions of island lifestyle. Botello is regarded as among the greatest Latin-American post-modern artisans and recognition and interest in his artwork continues to grow at this time, getting unheard of public auction prices. He never ever attached to any specific artistic school or movement and was a protean artist: he developed his own artistic style. He became a versatile and many-sided artist who worked well in all artistic media at his reach: oil paintings, sketching, printmaking, bronze sculptures, wood carving, taking pictures and mosaics.

Intaglio engraving, as a technique of producing prints, was invented in Germany by the 1430s, well following the woodcut print. Engraving was used by goldsmiths to be able to decorate metalwork, which includes armour, musical instruments and spiritual objects ever since olden days, and the niello technique, that involved scrubbing an alloy into the outlines in order to provide a contrasting coloration, likewise goes back to late antiquity. It has been proposed that goldsmiths began to print impressions of their work to document the style, and that printmaking developed from that.

Martin Schongauer was one of the earliest acknowledged artists to take advantage of the copper-engraving technique, and Albrecht Dürer is one of the most famous intaglio artisans. Italian and Netherlandish engraving began somewhat after the Germans, but were well developed by 1500. Drypoint and etching were also German creations of the fifteenth century, probably by the Housebook Master and Daniel Hopfer respectively. The golden age of artisans engraving was 1450-1550, after which the method lost ground to etching as being a medium for artists, though engravings continued to be produced in massive numbers right until after the advent of photography. Currently intaglio engraving is mostly utilized for currency, banknotes, passports, and sometimes for high-value postage stamps. The appearance of engraving is sometimes mimicked for things such as wedding invites by producing an embossment around lettering printed by another process (like lithography or offset) to imply the edges of an engraving plate.

Matt Brown has made woodblock prints in Japanese hanga tradition ever since 1993 using Japanese equipments and resources. The artist lives in the countryside of New Hampshire, among the New England states on the East coast of USA - the heartland of the American dream in which the very first immigrants from Europe arrived with concepts of liberty, independence as well as the desire of a far better life. Matt Brown's woodblock prints exhibit a lot more than the natural beauties of the US East coast. In the perspective of the observer they represent the old as well as genuine American ideals.

Printmaking is certainly a broad medium in art and could be learned nearly anyplace, in art institutions or from printmaking artists. Once you know the basics, you will find there are several techniques to create a really good print.
